Earliest meeting: Wednesday 14th June 1732
Final meeting: Friday 16th June 1732
The beautiful, historic West Sussex market town of Arundel, on the River Arun, enjoys a position on the South Downs overlooked by its magnificent Arundel Castle and Roman Catholic Cathedral. The town was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Harhunedelle, which translates as ‘valley of horehound’. The castle is currently the home of the Duke of Norfolk who enjoys horse racing, and was until recently the location of the racing stables of Epsom Derby winning trainer John Dunlop. However, the towns links with racing date back to the early 18th century when a 3-day meeting was held from Wednesday 14th to Friday 16th June 1732 when an early Jockey Club member, Sir Robert Fagg, owned one of the winners of the races.
